December 21: On this day in 1974, Leaf left-winger Inge Hammarstrom registered his first and only hat trick as a Leaf, helping the Leafs to double the Bruins 8-4. Hammarstrom had come over from Sweden with Borje Salming and the duo began their NHL careers together in 1973. Unfortunately, Hammarstrom's NHL career was not as illustrious as that of his Swedish counterpart. Leaf owner Harold Ballard once commented on Hammarstrom as a player who "could go into the corner with six eggs in his pocket and not break one of them." Inge played 292 games in a Leaf uniform and recorded 85 goals and 82 assists before being traded to St. Louis in November of 1977 for Jerry Butler.
