July 1: On this day in 1967, Mike Eastwood was born in Ottawa, Ontario. Eastwood was the Leafs' 5th draft choice, 91st overall in 1987. He played 111 games over four seasons with Toronto between 1991 and 1995, recording 37 points. In April of 1995, Eastwood was traded to Winnipeg with a draft pick for Tie Domi.
July 1: On this day in 1991, Cliff Fletcher replaced Floyd Smith as Leafs General Manager. His title was President, Chief Operating Office and General Manager. "Trader Cliff" went to work on restoring the glory days lost during the 1970's and '80's under owner Harold Ballard. Between 1991 and 1997, Fletcher appointed Wendel Clark as captain, brought in Pat Burns as head coach and masterminded some huge deals that saw the Leafs acquire Doug Gilmour and then Mats Sundin. The Leafs made it through to the Conference Finals in two consecutive years, 1993 and 1994. Eventually, Fletcher was ordered by owner Steve Stavro to trim the payroll. When the Leafs finished last in their Division in 1997, Fletcher was dismissed.
July 1: On this day in 2010, Colby Armstrong signed as an unrestricted free agent with the Toronto Maple Leafs for $3 million per year for 3 years.[3]
