On This Day July 4th.

July 4: On this day in 2000, Gary Roberts was signed as a free agent by the Maple Leafs. In his first two seasons with the Leafs, Roberts tallied 50 goals in blue and white. His contribution was most evident during the playoffs, especially in 2002 when he led the team in scoring with 19 points in 19 games and helped the team reach the Eastern Conference Finals. In all, Roberts registered 40 playoff points for the Leafs in just 4 seasons, good enough for 16th place on the list of all time Leaf playoff scoring leaders. His presence has been noticably missed since his departure after 2004 as the Leafs have not yet again qualified for the playoffs.

July 4: On this day in 2000, Shayne Corson was signed as a free agent with the Maple Leafs. With Toronto, Corson added grit and toughness while re-joining his brother-in-law and former teammate in Montreal, Darcy Tucker. Corson's offensive output was diminishing by this time in his career and he was limited to mostly defensive assignments. He added just 27 goals in 197 games as a Leaf. His time as a Leaf ended abruptly when he quit the team in the first round of the 2003 playoffs for health reasons.
