On This Day June 26th.

June 26: On this day in 1895, goalie George Hainsworth was born in Toronto, Ontario. Hainsworth was acquired by the Leafs from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for goalie Lorne Chabot in October of 1933. Prior to joining the Leafs, Hainsworth set a goaltending record that no other goalie has come close to or is ever likely to approach when in 1928-29, he registered 22 shutouts in one season. The league schedule that year was only 44 games long. He won the Vezina trophy the first three years it was awarded in 1927, '28 and '29. He also won 2 Stanley Cups with the Canadiens. As of 2007, Hainsworth ranks second to only Terry Sawchuk in career shutouts with a total of 94, 75 as a Canadien and 19 as a Leaf. George Hainsworth was killed in a car crash in 1950 at the age of 55. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1961.
