July 31: On this day in 1929, George "Shorty" Horne drowned in a boating accident in lake Sagatosky in northern Ontario. He was 25 years old. Horne was coming off his first and only season with the Leafs in which he scored 9 goals and added 3 assists. Shorty's name is engraved on the Stanley Cup as a member of the 1926 Montreal Maroons.

July 31: On this day in 1985, defenseman Blake Wesley signed as a free agent with Toronto. He only played 27 games with the Leafs including his last career NHL game on January 19, 1986. Blake is the older brother of Glen Wesley who also played briefly on defense for Toronto.
