September 16: On this day in 1952, Hall-of-Famer Frank Mathers retired as an NHL player and accepted a demotion to the AHL where he played, coached and was a senior executive for several years. Mathers, a defenseman, was in the Leaf lineup on opening night, 1948. Between 1948 and 1952, he played a total of 23 NHL regular season games, but no playoff games, all with the Leafs. Mathers was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1992 as a builder.
