On This Day September 17th.

September 17: On this day in 1979, former Leaf and Team Canada 1972 hero Paul Henderson returned to the NHL for the first time since he left the Leafs by signing as a free agent with the Atlanta Flames. Henderson's days as a Leaf had ended in discontent with owner Harold Ballard in 1974 when he defected to the WHA's Toronto Toros. Henderson had 7 goals in just 30 games with the Flames in 1979-80, but the highlight of his season was a return to Maple Leaf Gardens on March 6 when he notched two goals against the Leafs and was selected as the game's first star.
