June 22: On this day in 1996, the Leafs decided that future Hall-of-Famer Mike Gartner no longer fit in the team's plans and traded him to Phoenix for a 4th round draft choice. Gartner had been a trade deadline acquisition in 1994 and had helped the Leafs to reach the Conference Finals. After leaving Toronto, Gartner had yet another 30+ goal season and retired after 1997-98 with 708 career goals.
