On This Day July 5th.

July 5: On this day in 1983, Barry Melrose was lured away from the Leafs and signed as a free agent with the Detroit Red Wings where he finished his career. Melrose played three seasons on defense for the Leafs between 1980 and 1983 after being claimed on waivers from Winnipeg. A few years after his playing career was over, Melrose became head coach of the L.A. Kings and in his first season, 1992-93, he led the team to the Stanley Cup final after defeating the Leafs in the Conference Finals. The Kings eventually lost to the Canadiens.
